HW History

The Health & Wellness Center is named for two sisters - Ke wed nok which is Potawatomi for North Wind,  and Wa se gish gok which is Potawatomi for Breaking Daylight.

Together these sisters made Indian medicine from bark, roots, leaves, snakes, purple flowers and herbs. They did not sell the medicine, but instead they received blankets and other gifts for their services. Ke wed nok and Wa se gish gok both lived long lives and were an inspiration to many.

In 2000, the Forest County Potawatomi Health & Wellness Center opened its 42,000 square-foot facility to the general public. The center was built to provide medical, dental, behavioral health and pharmaceutical services, optometry, physical therapy, speech therapy and community health services to tribal members, other Native Americans, and residents of the surrounding communities. The center provides many services which are not available anywhere else within a 30-mile radius.

Our mission is to promote quality health care in a professional and traditional way for Native Americans, their families, and the surrounding community; in a trusting, respectful, and confidential manner for the wellness and future of the
                                                                                              community.
