Purpose of Position:
Provide confidential support and assistance to domestic abuse and sexual abuse victims and their families so they can make decisions about the options that are available to them.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide information regarding the spiral of violence, continuum of violence, legal and medical needs, employment possibilities, housing referrals, public assistance, and other social service advocacy and referrals as appropriate.
- Provide a liaison relationship between parent, children, and professionals in order to provide a comprehensive array of services.
- Completes intakes on each new resident to shelter; meets with resident on a regular basis to set goals, discuss options and provides support; maintains follow-up appointments with clients who leaves the shelter; develops safety plans as needed.
- Provides training and/or public presentation to various community organizations as required.
- Facilitate victim support groups, develops curriculum, maintains records, and provides support.
- Works cooperatively with the director, and other staff to fulfill programs objectives. Services are to include but not to be limited to: individual counseling; goals and objective sessions: crisis telephone response; information and referral for residents and callers; screening of incoming residents; intakes; and overall safety and security of the building.
- Assists victims with completing and obtaining restraining order; attends court hearing and assists victims with understanding legal options and rights.
- Collaborate with appropriate intra tribal programs and other service providers to ensure the safety of domestic violence victims and their families.
- Maintain statistical records and resident forms, including resident logs, staff logs, and client chronological files along with other standard forms.
- Coordinate with previous shifts to ensure continuous support so that residents’ needs are met.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field or relevant experience.
- Minimum of one year experience indirect service in a residential setting desirable.
- Must have valid Wisconsin driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
- Must be able to handle multiple situations simultaneously, computer knowledge and record keeping skills.
- Must be aware of and strictly abide by the Code of Confidentiality.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks; ability to work independently, and in a team environment.
- Understanding of domestic violence issues and ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to prepare and/or interpret a variety of documents including client records, police reports, counseling form, letters and other correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, volunteers, shelter staff, donors, police personnel, community agency personnel, community agency representatives and others; both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated and documented experience in the field of domestic and advocacy-based counseling.
- Experience on networking and advocating with other agencies on behalf of battered women and their children.
- Must possess strong ethical values.
