"Way of the Warrior"
Community Film Night

Thursday June 26, 2008

Begins at 6pm with Opening and Feast
Forest County Potawatomi Veterans Post 1, Walking 4 Directions Singers

This film uses personal stories of heroes and soldiers to examine the warrior ethic in Indian Country and understand why military service is so highly valued in Native communities. These stories from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam weave a tapestry of themes: the warrior ethic, prejudice and stereotypes, forced assimilation, poverty, cultural pride, redemptive acts and healing. The documentary reveals what it means to be Ogichidaa - one who protects and follows the way of the warrior.

With Special Guests Speakers:

Patty Loew, Ph.D. is the Producer of Way of the Warrior. She is an associate professor at UW-Madison, a producer for WHA-TV (PBS) and co-host of In Wisconsin, a weekly news and public affairs program on Wisconsin Public Television. She is the author of Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal and Native People of Wisconsin. Loew is an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe.

Jim Northrup (Anishinaabe, Fond du Lac), is a Vietnam Veteran (India Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division) and the author of the Fond du Lac Follies a syndicated column distributed in the The Circle, The Native American Press, and News From Indian Country. He is the author of two books - Rez Road Follies, Canoes, Casinos, Computers and Birch Bark Baskets and Walking the Rez Road.
